In this chapter, we experience the three families and the kids showing up in the court room. What surprised me was that JT and especially Digger had admitted what they have done wrong, and that they were taking the full blame. I suspected that Brady thought that with their lawyers, they were going to fight about the situation and give reasons why they were wrong. But clearly, both kids knew that they were known as "murderers" and that it was truly all their fault. I think that the most extremely important thing that Digger said was when he mentioned about how Brady told him if Ben were Hank or LeeAnn in the kayak. What Brady said had made Digger feel bad for Ben and his whole family. If my two best friends were in court, I would be very sad, but proud that my friends knew it was all their fault and that they were murderers. I honestly would not feel sorry for them, because they killed someone that I really loved. I think that it was very fair for JT and Digger to get the same punishment, which was to be sent to forestry camp. Clearly, if I were Brady, I would have strongly appeared in court and make them get the punishment they deserved.
In this chapter, we learn about what happened the night Brady had babysat Ben. When they were watch The Lion King, Ben said "Why they doing that, Bwady" and in return, Brady said "Because he's bad." After doing some thinking, Ben finally said that "No Scaw's not bad, he's just being mean." This shows us that just because someone does something wrong, doesn't mean that it is their whole personality. Also, even if somebody has done something wrong, they can always change and become a better person. This relates to me because even at times when my friends or me do bad things, we know that those actions don't symbolize who we are, and that we were just being mean or stupid. What Ben said was great because it helps us see that others can always change from what they have done and that is why we still keep our friends because we forgive one another. Text to Self- I can connect with Brady because in the book he has to choose between protecting his friends, or telling the truth for the best of himself and other. My situation was not as bad at this, but once my friends and I had gone somewhere where we shouldn't have. I kept this a secret from my parents, but after a couple of days, I told them the truth because I couldn't handle the guilt inside of me anymore. I understand how Brady feels because I have gone through a similar situation and I believe it was right for him to tel the truth.
Text to Text- In Nothing But The Truth written by Avi, there was a situation about Philip, and instantly there was a news article about him that lied and said extra things that weren't true. In Red Kayak, the article about Brady and Ben also included lies. This is a connection because it shows us that newspapers like to lie and exaggerate just to get more attention, which isn't right. Text to World- In Paris and other parts of the world, ISIS had killed many people. I can connect this with the book because Digger and JT have also resulted in murdering others. This shows me that there isnot only a connection between the killings, but also the families' reactions. Both families in Paris and Maryland are similar because they feel sadness and depression from the murder. In is chapter, their have been many relationships that are in jeopardy in this point of the book. First of all Brady and his father have a strong relationship, but I think that after telling his father all the truth about the kayak situation, Brady's dad will be very disappointed that it was Brady't idea about drilling holes in the Canoe. Second, I think that the Diangelo's relationship will change if Brady tells the truth because they will realize that it wasn't Mrs.DiAngelo's fault and that it was just some dumb boys. I think that soon depression and sadness will be lowered down once they know the truth. Lastly, I think that the relationship between Brady and JT and Digger will change dramatically because the two boys trusted Brady to keep it a secret, but once he turns them into the police, it will be a sign of betrayal to JT and Digger. Also the consequences are for them to be left in jail and I strongly believe that after that, they will never forgive Brady for what he had done. Overall, I think that the only think that will change these relationships is if Brady doesn't turn his best rends into the police and if he can persuade his dad that it wasn't all his fault. Otherwise, I think the endings to these relationships will be great because the DiAngelos will be satisfied, his father will have a better connection to Brady and trust him more, and also Brady's friends JT and Digger deserve the punishment for what they have done. Clearly I think that Brady should just tell nothing but the truth.
In this chapter, we find out that Digger's home life is far worse than we thought, like his parents fighting. I think that this an excuse for his behavior about the kayak because whenever you have personal problems, people tend to take out the frustration onto other people or just doing insane things. In this case, I think that Digger was just acting out of his own self and I think that the horror from the situation resulted from his difficulties at home. This has never happened to me, but I strongly think that your family is the base of your life and without a family, many things can go wrong.
Thomas Parks once told his son, "Doing what's right is not always the easiest thing." Once I was in a situation where I had to follow this quote and do the right thing even though it wasn't the easiest choice for me. That time was when my family had a foster puppy to take care of. We took care of it for a couple of weeks, until the time had came when it was healthy enough to join a family. My family had two choices, to either keep the beloved puppy or give it away to another family. At the time, my parents knew that if we bought it, I wouldn't be able to take care of it because of school. But on the other hand, I wanted to keep it. I knew that the right choice was to give it away for it to have a better life, but it was hard for me because I wanted to keep it. But after my family and I made the decision, it had good results and my family and the puppy were both happy. I believe that what Brady's dad said is a great statement, and that everyone should follow it.
In this chapter, Brady is wondering on what to do about the incident. If I was Brady, I would have told my parents the whole truth and see what they would do. I would tell them everything because they are grown adults and would probably make the right decision for me. I think that it was very dumb and risky to just dump the drill in the river because then it was gone forever. I honestly wouldn't care what would happen to JT and Digger because they murdered someone that I really loved and it was all their fault. In chapters 17-22, a roller coaster of things happened. Brady went to Rhode Island to see his cousins and aunt, and on the train ride he had many thoughts of his friends and thought back to memories of his two friends. In Rhode Island, he finds a picture of Amanda and he gets to keep it. This made Brady very emotional and now he feels connected with the picture in his wallet. When he comes back, his mother finds out about the picture and they finally have a loving talk about Amanda. Then, Brady hung out with Carl and they both ran into JT. Instantly, thoughts ran through his mind about the incident because JT looked really pale and sick. When he got home, he spent time with his dad and asked if his father can haul out the red kayak from the river, and this is when Brady regrets not opening up to his own father.
Pictures:Dialogue: Brady- Digger, why did you drill holes in the kayak? Digger- Because he kicked us off our property Brady- Its not ours anymore it is his. Digger- I wasn't even doing anything wrong! Brady- Yes you did. You were smoking on someone else's property which is not right. Digger- Well I didn't even mean to hurt the child. Brady- Digger it doesn't matter you should not have done that. Digger- Brady, if you tell anyone about me I will accuse the murder on you! Brady- On me? I didn't even do anything wrong. You don't even have proof! Digger- Well, it was your idea in the first place. Brady- How dare you say that! I would never do that to anyone though. Digger- Well apparently I murdered someone, but if you spill the beans the trouble will come to you. Brady- Your so nasty. I can't believe you did this. Brady- Its even sad that your best friend JT told me it was you. Digger- That little sucker! Brady- He even said it was mostly your fault. Digger- I knew that dumb kid would let it out. He has no courage to keep a secret. Brady- Your the one who did it in the first place. Digger- Well maybe we should blame it on JT so we both won't get in trouble. Brady- Oh yeah that's a good idea. Let's do that. Part of Dialogue In Audio: |
